Southern OregonOnce upon a time, this remote corner of the U.S. dreamed of creating a new state called Jefferson to recognize its difference from the rest of the west coast. The economic boom after World War 2 may have put those aspirations to rest, but Southern Oregon will always hold on to its independence amongst its larger neighbors. Prospectors still hunt for gold in this mountainous region home to the West's most biodiverse forest (Kalmiopsis), and a visit here will give you a glimpse of pioneer life as you stumble upon wildlife or descend into caves. Vineyards, orchards and timber now make up the region's core economy and you could easily spend many days visiting the distinct appellations of each valley. Lined with restaurants and galleries, Ashland has become the cultural center of the area hosting the premier Shakespeare Festival among many other annual celebrations. But when it gets hot, the best way to soak up the scenery may just be floating down the wild and scenic Rogue River. |
